LRDB | Author of the Month | Magdalena Gómez

Shameless Woman is the long-awaited collection of Bronx born, legendary poet,

Magdalena Gómez. As an early and influential member of the Nuyorican Literary

Movement, she is cited in the recent book by poet and scholar, Urayoán Noel, In Visible

Movement: Nuyorican Poetry from the Sixties to Slam. “Magdalena Gómez, a poet,

performer and playwright whose work has served as a bridge between the founding

Nuyorican poets and a new generation informed by slam and def poetry.”

From the back cover: “A provocative, challenging and ultimately uplifting memoir

in poems to be read aloud or in silence, performed on stage or naked in a

supermarket. Rage and Love have found a safe meeting place at last.”

“Magdalena Gómez offers us miraculous combinations: social protest with endearing

humor; authentic human insights of both U.S. and Puerto Rican society, and feminist

inspiration with universal truths. We are fortunate to have this great poet creating new

works on our behalf.”

– Muriel Fox, co-founder of the National Organization for Women (N.O.W)

Seven of the ten performance works of her off-Broadway audience acclaimed

hit, Dancing in My Cockroach Killers, are included in the book. The production,

by Pregones and the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, was featured as part of the

Encuentro 2014 conference at the Los Angeles Theater Center. Ms. Gómez is currently

booking national and international performance readings and book signings.
