ABOUT THE BOOK
Summer for Raymond “Smiles” King is not off to a good start. He’s supposed to be the assistant crew chief at his summer camp, but when the director chooses Cookie Camacho instead, a summer-long rivalry begins. Meanwhile, Smiles’s best friend, the aspiring b-boy Guillermo “Nike” Vega, has set his wandering eye on Sara, the sweet yet sassy new camp counselor. It may be the summer of Reaganomics, the twin epidemics of crack and AIDS, war in the Middle East, and urban blight, but it’s also the summer when hip-hop proved its staying power without losing its innocence, something that Smiles and Nike struggle to do.
